Sonate H. XVI:28

About this work

Keyboard Sonata Hob. XVI:28 in E-flat major begins Allegro moderato with an ornamented phrase that Haydn interrupts through rests, shifts of register and replies in the bass. The hands quickly share the runs, giving the movement a conversational character.

The Menuetto contrasts major-key stability with a more connected and darker Trio in E-flat minor. The Presto finale returns to brilliant writing: scales, broken chords and rapid shifts follow one another without sacrificing dynamic surprises.

Place ornaments within the motion of the phrase and keep rests active. In the Trio, listen to the resolution of every dissonance; for the finale, secure position changes first and reserve accents for genuine musical replies.
