About this work
Subtitled March and Two-Step, A Breeze From Alabama moves in C major and 2/4, beginning with an upbeat under the direction Not Fast. Its opening sets a syncopated line against a left hand alternating bass notes and chords. The hands seem to pull the motion in different directions, yet the pulse needs to remain composed. Character comes from accurate displacements and replies rather than from increasing the tempo.
Several repeated strains follow, and the piece does not remain in its opening key. An A-flat-major passage darkens the colour, another settles in F major, and C major eventually returns. The material also changes shape through stepwise runs, repeated chords, octaves and shifts of register. Each return should retain its own identity while still carrying the listener towards the next section.
Begin with the bass alone, aiming for each next low note before placing the chord that follows it. Add the right hand without pedal and check that syncopations do not displace the second beat. At key changes, isolate the first two bars to prepare positions and fingering. Repeats can then support a modest change of balance: a more reserved first statement and a firmer second one, without weighing down chords or rushing transitions.
