Search Light Rag

About this work

The PDF gives the title as Search-Light Rag and sets the piece in B-flat major and 2/4 at a Slow March Tempo. The opening opposes long, slurred upper notes to a left hand that continues to alternate bass and chord. The challenge is to sustain the melody above that regular motion: each attack needs to lead towards the next without allowing the accompaniment to cut the phrase short.

Repeated strains move through E-flat major and renew the texture with chromatic figures, closer chords and dynamic changes. Some episodes are broadly slurred, while others are more articulated. The slow march nevertheless remains their common foundation. If the tempo slackens further in dense textures, syncopations lose tension; if it accelerates through runs, the long notes no longer have room to breathe.

Play the upper line alone first, holding every value, then add only the low bass notes. Complete the left-hand chords quietly afterwards. In chromatic passages, practise connections by hand position rather than note by note and monitor the regularity of the second beat. Pedal may extend selected harmonies, but it needs to change with the bass. Use repeats to broaden the dynamic range, never to alter the pulse.
