About this work

Solace is subtitled A Mexican Serenade and begins in C major and 2/4 at a Very slow march time. A long expressive line unfolds above a characteristic bass, often arranged in triplet groups. The slow pace exposes every slur and interval. To avoid stillness, the melody must retain a destination while the accompaniment sustains discreet movement beneath the held notes.

The score contains several repeats, pedal directions, a tempo returns and fermatas. A section in F major renews the colour without breaking the overall character. Bass figures and chords change disposition while the upper line retains its breadth. Suspensions need room to breathe without erasing the pulse: a silence or held note remains connected to what follows.

Practise the melody alone and identify the high point of every phrase, then play the bass without pedal to even out its triplets. Combine these two lines before adding inner chords. Introduce pedal afterwards in short changes following the harmony; continuous resonance would blur chromatic movement. At fermatas, retain the tempo mentally and prepare the restart before lifting the hands. Slowness should broaden the gesture rather than thicken the sound.
