About this work
Sun Flower Slow Drag, composed by Scott Joplin and Scott Hayden, is subtitled Rag Time Two Step. The piece begins in B-flat major and 2/4 under the direction Not Fast. The right hand combines syncopated melody with repeated chords while the left alternates bass notes and chords. Its movement should remain composed: energy comes from rhythmic placement and contrasting attacks rather than high speed.
Repeated strains develop the motifs before a section in E-flat major. Some phrases rely on a slurred line, while others use more vertical replies and dynamic changes. Repeated chords can quickly harden the sound or tire the hand, yet their function is to restart the phrase and colour a return. The bass must continue to supply an even framework through these changes of texture.
First practise the right-hand syncopations on a single note with the left hand reduced to its low bass notes. Add the chords gradually and release the wrist after every repetition. For left-hand leaps, prepare the transfer as soon as the preceding chord is placed. Isolate the first two bars of the E-flat section to establish its new positions. Build the final contrasts through touch and dynamics while preserving exactly the same pulse.
