Sonatina no 1, Op. 20 — Allegro

About this work

The first movement of Kuhlau’s Sonatina Op. 20 No. 1 has the directness of teaching music that refuses to plod. Its opening theme establishes C major clearly, then scales, broken chords and exchanges between the hands immediately set the phrase in motion.

The real task is to keep that momentum without hardening the articulation. Locate the harmonic points of arrival before increasing the tempo, lighten the ends of figures, and let the bass act as a rhythmic partner. In semiquaver passages, consistent fingering and a steady pulse matter more than speed gained through unwanted accents.

Practise each change of position in a short group, then join the groups by aiming for every cadence. When the theme returns, retain its character while slightly changing the colour: the listener should recognise the reprise without feeling that the page has simply started again.
