Liszt’s Second Ballade S.171 opens Allegro moderato with a chromatic rumble in the left hand above which the right hand places widely spaced calls. This dark material alternates with recitative, silence and a more lyrical theme that returns in several forms.
Across 19 pages these ideas are continually transformed: hammered chords, octaves, double-note runs, tremolos and broad arpeggios lead to successive peaks. An Allegretto section later brings the lyrical theme back in a calmer light before the brilliant coda.
Build the work in large spans rather than bar by bar. Keep the wrist flexible and the pulse clear in the low motif; in lyrical episodes, project the melody from within the texture and plan each breath before tension begins to rise again.
