Mendelssohn wrote the Octet in E-flat major Op.20 for four violins, two violas and two cellos. The Allegro moderato ma con fuoco circulates motifs among all eight players with an energy that goes beyond a simple double quartet.

The Andante stretches the lines, the Scherzo suddenly lightens the texture and the final Presto layers entries and launches towards a highly concentrated close. Inner parts constantly participate in the motion.

Rehearse in groups of four before assembling the octet. Unify articulation as motifs change part, protect the middle voices and reserve full volume for genuinely collective arrivals.
