Mendelssohn’s Song without Words, Op. 102 No. 3, is a Presto in 6/8. A light repeated figure launches the piece, supported by brief chords and bass notes that shift quickly. Its interest lies less in one sustained melody than in the motif’s energy, its displacement and replies across several registers.

Sixty-six bars alternate staccato writing, denser chords and episodes in which the hands exchange roles. Dynamics range from pianissimo to forte, with sudden accents that must not break the motion. Repeats and alternative endings organise the form; their route needs to be secure before speed is pursued.

Practise the opening cell in groups of three quavers, then connect two broad pulses per bar. Isolate bass notes and chords so their shifts can be prepared without unnecessary weight. Add dynamic contrasts only when the repeats flow. The Presto should remain mobile and clear, never rushed or hammered.
