Tableaux d'une exposition : Promenade
About this work
The first Promenade opens Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition with a bare melody marked Allegro giusto, nel modo russico. Bars of five and six beats alternate like a visitor’s uneven steps without causing the phrase to lose direction.
The theme moves from unison into increasingly broad chords. Its returns change register and weight, and the second page carries the walk towards a forceful statement that prepares entry into the cycle’s first picture.
Count internal groups rather than a succession of identical beats. Let unisons breathe like recitative and prepare chords close to the keys; breadth should come from harmony and register without automatically slowing at every peak.
