A Little Night Music KV 525

About this work

Eine kleine Nachtmusik has been used so often as a postcard for Mozart that its bite is easy to forget. The first movement launches a unison chord, then answers it with a lighter phrase: this alternation between assertion and conversation animates the entire exposition. Mozart entered the work in his catalogue on 10 August 1787 for a string ensemble.

The surviving version has four movements, but the autograph catalogue announced five: an opening minuet has disappeared. That detail keeps us from treating the work as a small, perfectly closed block. In the Allegro, listen to the variety of articulations; in the Romance, apparent simplicity rests on a finely balanced phrase; the Minuet needs spring, while the finale favours wit over haste.

In ensemble, coordinate attacks and note endings first. The first violins often carry the melodic profile, but violas and cellos determine the stability of the rhythm and harmony. A shared dynamic plan is better than five heroically personal ones. Keep the upbeats active: in Mozart, a well-prepared silence contributes almost as much as a note.

What the document contains

a 12-page full score;
separate parts for two violins, viola and cello, each 5 to 6 pages long;
five PDFs in one archive, plus a separate MIDI file.

A double bass may double the cello part depending on the chosen ensemble. The material covers the four surviving movements.
