About this work
Abendempfindung K.523, composed in 1787 to a poem by Joachim Heinrich Campe, reflects on evening, passing time and remembrance after death. Mozart entrusts this inward movement to a long, flexible and almost speech-like vocal line.
The piano first supports the voice with widely spaced chords, then animates selected passages with more mobile figures. Modulations and silences broaden the argument towards a conclusion in which calm remains tinged with gravity.
Speak the German text while following its harmonic stresses. Keep consonants brief within long vocal phrases; the piano prepares changes of colour without covering the middle register and allows the silences to breathe.
