Andante en Do pour flûte K 315

About this work

The C-major Andante K.315 belongs to the group of flute works associated with Ferdinand Dejean’s Mannheim commission of 1777-1778. The New Mozart Edition describes it as composed after the Concerto K.313, without allowing the exact circumstances of any substitution or performance to be stated with certainty. Unlike the two neighbouring concertos, its autograph survives. This direct source gives particular weight to a short piece that concentrates a genuine concerto dialogue into one movement.

Oboes and horns open piano while the strings alternate pizzicato and arco. The flute enters almost at once with a flexible line made of appoggiaturas, trills and small accelerations. The soloist is never placed over a static accompaniment: violins take up its figures, basses change articulation and winds punctuate cadences. Forte-piano contrasts articulate the form without breaking the Andante’s singing character.

The central section temporarily leaves the bright stability of C major. Chromatic notes, repetitions and close replies between flute and violins increase the tension. When the opening material returns, it is not merely copied: the central episode makes its silences, suspensions and cadences more perceptible. The final page gathers the flute’s runs and the tutti chords into a clear close, with no written solo cadenza in this file.

This score is useful for practising continuity of breath at a moderate tempo. Ornaments should lead the line rather than interrupt it, and semiquavers should remain lighter than their destination notes. With the orchestra, check every pizzicato-arco change and the oboe replies, since they shape the phrase as much as the soloist. The piece’s brevity makes every return audible, so dynamics and articulations need unusually exact preparation.
