About this work
Mozart entered the Horn Concerto K.495 in his catalogue on 26 June 1786, noting that it was intended for Joseph Leutgeb. The full score preserved here clearly gives the key as E-flat major, despite the historical record’s abbreviated title. The autograph is no longer complete: the first movement is missing and only parts of the other two survive. Printed tradition and early copies therefore play an important part in the text used by performers today.
The Allegro moderato begins with two oboes, two orchestral horns and strings. Sustained horn notes add depth to the chords while violins animate the texture with scales and semiquavers. The principal horn enters with simple gestures and gradually develops longer lines. Tutti-solo oppositions are clear, yet Mozart maintains constant conversation through oboe replies and fragments taken up by the first violins.
The Romance, marked Andante, rests on triple metre and a highly connected line. String triplets support the melody without pressing it; forte tuttis create arches between the soloist’s episodes. The Rondo Allegro vivace returns in 6/8 with a hunting refrain, repeated notes and echoes. Central episodes soften this profile through piano passages and longer phrases before the final page gathers calls, scales and E-flat chords.
The first movement requires hierarchy among sustained notes: they should lead towards renewed motion rather than remain still. In the Romance, the horn can seek vocal articulation and reserve accents for genuine harmonic supports. The finale needs a secure subdivision into six quavers; feel two large beats while keeping runs legible. Orchestral horns should support the key without competing with the principal horn in forte returns.
