Concerto en Mib pour cor K 447

About this work

The E-flat major Concerto K.447 is not dated in Mozart’s manuscript catalogue. The New Mozart Edition rejects the old 1783 dating and cautiously places the work later, probably around 1787, on the evidence of handwriting and instrumentation. The central Romance appears to have had a partly independent material history. These uncertainties do not weaken the unity of the surviving concerto; they simply require documented evidence to be separated from a chronology repeated for many years.

The Allegro combines principal horn with two B-flat clarinets, two bassoons and strings. The absence of oboes and orchestral horns creates a darker, more flexible colour than in K.417 or K.495. Clarinets answer the soloist’s calls, while bassoons extend the bass or become genuine melodic partners. Tuttis remain compact, but solo episodes open into highly transparent accompaniments in which every horn articulation becomes audible.

The Romance, marked Larghetto in this full score, gives the horn a seemingly simple line supported by regular string figures and sustained winds. Its expression depends on suspensions and changes of colour, not on constant rubato. The final Allegro in 6/8 restores hunting gestures, then diverts them through more connected passages, piano echoes and modulations. The last pages intensify semiquaver motion without thickening the forces.

Ensemble work should begin with clarinets, bassoons and strings alone so that the accompaniment is phrased like a principal part. The horn can then place breaths inside wind handovers. In the Larghetto, avoid slowing at every appoggiatura; the line benefits from remaining long. In the finale, feel the 6/8 in two and distinguish open calls from legato passages, otherwise the whole work acquires a single colour.
