Duo No. 6 for two horns, KV 487 — Menuetto and Trio
About this work
Menuetto No. 6 from the KV 487 Duos uses only two horn parts, yet Mozart gives them several roles. One leads while the other supports or answers, then the balance reverses. The trio relaxes the design before the menuet returns.
Establish the dance beats without mechanically stressing every first beat. Upbeats need a shared motion, and long notes must remain alive. When both horns play the same rhythm, intonation and the quality of the attack matter more than sheer volume.
Plan breaths as shared punctuation. In the trio, lighten the sound and listen more closely to intervals; on the return, recover the menuet’s stability without stiffening the tempo. Slow work on cadences lets both players coordinate tuning, note length and release before restoring the dance.
