Fantaisie KV 594 pour deux pianos
About this work
Mozart composed the Adagio and Allegro in F minor K.594 in 1790 for a mechanical organ, then made a version for piano four hands. A grave Adagio frames, through its final return, a far more mobile contrapuntal Allegro.
The two players share chords, imitative lines and changes of register. In the Allegro, the subject passes between Primo and Secondo as rapid runs thicken the texture; the slow return restores the dotted rhythms and dark colour of the opening.
First read the two parts vertically to coordinate chords and upbeats. In the fugue, identify every handover and maintain a shared pulse; when the Adagio returns, broaden the sound without slowing every dotted motif.
