The Little Funeral March in C minor K.453a, written in 1784, bears the playful title Marche funebre del Signor Maestro Contrapunto. Mozart combines the solemn tread of a funeral march with deliberately learned contrapuntal density.
Dotted rhythms, low chords and exchanges between registers give this single page a character that is both serious and ironic. Its compact form moves directly towards its cadences without a decorative episode or extended development.
