Ouverture des Noces de Figaro K 492

About this work

The Marriage of Figaro, on Lorenzo Da Ponte’s libretto after Beaumarchais, was first performed at Vienna’s Burgtheater on 1 May 1786 under Mozart’s direction. Across one “mad day”, servants and masters multiply schemes, disguises and reversals of power. The overture quotes no aria from the opera and allows no time for a solemn introduction. Its Presto instead turns this continuous activity into orchestral motion, with one idea already chasing the next.

The beginning is almost whispered: bassoons and low strings launch piano semiquavers, quickly taken up by violins and violas. Woodwinds add short replies, then the orchestra expands in waves until trumpets and timpani enter. Mozart builds momentum from very simple fragments—scales, repeated notes, chords and small appoggiaturas—whose force comes from transfers between sections. Brief silences are as important as the runs because they give each renewal its surprise.

The full score alternates passages in which almost the whole orchestra plays with others where only a few voices keep the race moving. Crescendos should therefore not be understood as a uniform increase in volume: they enlarge the texture, add winds or lift the motive into a higher register. On the final page, fortepiano chords and quick string replies concentrate these contrasts before a firm conclusion with no preparatory slowing.

To practise the overture, establish the semiquavers first at a moderate tempo with shared articulation among bassoons, cellos, double basses and violins. Add winds while checking that their attacks extend the same gesture. Long rises benefit from being directed towards a precise destination instead of swelling from their first bar. Keep the silences active as well: the Presto sounds genuinely fast when every entry begins together, not when the orchestra rushes.
