About this work
Quartet K. 80 begins with an Adagio, an unusual choice that places shared breathing at the centre of the performance. The four strings often move within one pulse, yet brief answers from the first violin, viola or cello keep the texture from becoming merely vertical.
The Allegro broadens the exchanges and quickens the transfer of motifs. A Menuetto with trio then tightens the phrases around dance stresses before a lively Rondeau closes the work. Each movement changes character without breaking the balance between two violins, viola and cello.
Begin by tuning the attacks and releases of the Adagio. In the faster movements, follow the motif when it leaves the first violin: the receiving part should become audible without forcing. Keep a supple dance pulse in the Menuetto and clear articulation throughout the Rondeau.
