About this work
Quartet K. 156 reverses the expected order by beginning with a Presto. The first violin’s figures are quickly relayed or supported by contrary motion, while shared chords punctuate an argument that must remain light despite its speed.
The central Adagio gives more space to sustained notes, suspensions and answers between registers. The last movement is a Tempo di Menuetto with trio: dance replaces a fast finale and closes the work through contrast of character rather than acceleration.
Choose a Presto tempo in which the articulation of all four parts remains together. In the Adagio, listen especially to the resolution of intervals. The Menuetto needs measured stresses and a more supple trio; prepare the return of the dance without changing the chosen pulse.
