About this work
Quartet K.158 belongs to Mozart’s group of Milanese quartets and uses a contrasting three-movement design. The Allegro presents brief phrases, often led by the first violin, yet viola and cello regularly renew the bass while the second violin completes the answers.
The Andante un poco Allegretto broadens the breathing and brings more sustained lines across the four registers. A Tempo di Minuetto replaces the expected fast finale: its dance stresses frame a more supple trio, after which the return of the minuet restores the opening character.
In the Allegro, choose a tempo in which passagework remains clear and cadences can breathe. Then work on the Andante from the inner parts, which often determine the colour of the chord. In the Menuetto, retain the same pulse at the return and distinguish the trio through tone rather than by slowing down.
