About this work
Quartet K. 168 begins with an Allegro in which all four parts take a greater share in building the motifs. Lines cross and imitate one another, while shared chords act as structural points rather than mere accompaniment to the first violin.
A brief Andante suspends the momentum before the Menuetto and trio. The final Allegro develops clearly audible imitative entries: one figure passes successively through the instruments and creates an increasingly dense contrapuntal texture up to the closing cadences.
Identify the part that temporarily carries the motif in each movement. The Andante needs calm tuning and coordinated releases; the Menuetto needs supple stresses. In the finale, rehearse the entries alone first, then add the counter-lines without covering their articulation.
