Quatuor n°10 en Do majeur KV 170

About this work

Quartet K. 170 begins with an Andante and variations. The theme presents a simple phrase structure that four transformations redistribute among the instruments, alter rhythmically and illuminate through different registers before it returns as a coda.

The Menuetto with trio retains concise writing. An Un poco Adagio then gives more space to sustained lines and suspensions. The final Rondeaux Allegro sets the regularity of its refrain against more mobile episodes in which the conversation gains speed.

Play the theme first while revealing its bass and cadences, then recover those landmarks in every variation. The slow movement requires close vertical listening. In the Rondeaux, keep the refrain stable and differentiate episodes through articulation rather than changes of tempo.
