About this work
The Allegro spiritoso of Quartet K. 172 moves through brief impulses, answers and rapid changes of register. The lower parts do more than mark the bass: they renew phrases and complete motifs introduced by the first violin.
The central Adagio slows the circulation to reveal sustained notes and harmonic tensions. The Menuetto with trio restores dance stresses, then the final Allegro assai develops long sequences in which all four instruments must retain rhythmic independence.
In the first movement, unify the upbeats and let every answer reach its cadence. Tune the Adagio from the cello upwards while controlling resolutions. For the finale, practise sequences in short blocks and watch the viola, often essential to continuity between the violins and bass.
