Quartet K. 173 places its Allegro ma molto moderato in a tense D minor. All four instruments exchange close figures, syncopations and chords that continually shift the weight of the phrase. The moderate tempo allows this counterpoint to remain intelligible.
The Andantino grazioso brings a more supple line without erasing the harmonic shadows. The Menuetto and trio intensify contrasts of register. In the final Allegro, imitative entries and counter-lines form a dense texture that carries the ensemble towards a firm conclusion.
Establish the harmonic stresses of the first movement before refining articulation. In the Andantino, transfer the song without a break in tone. For the finale, isolate the subject in every part, then add the other lines while keeping a broad enough pulse for all entries to be heard.
