Quatuor n°15 en Ré mineur KV 421
About this work
Quartet K. 421 establishes D minor in the opening bars of its Allegro moderato. Repeated accompaniments sustain continuous tension beneath often restrained phrases, after which the four strings unite in more forceful answers. Silences and dynamic changes belong to the syntax rather than merely colouring it.
The Andante retains a discreet unease beneath its song. The Menuetto Allegretto hardens the stresses, while the trio briefly lightens the texture. The finale, Allegretto ma non troppo, transforms a theme through successive variations before a più Allegro concentrates the momentum in the last section.
Settle repeated values without stiffness and place breaths together. When the melody passes to viola or cello, reduce the other parts at once. In the finale, identify the theme beneath every variation and retain one reference pulse until the explicitly marked acceleration.
