About this work
Quartet K.464 builds its Allegro from short cells that pass from one part to another. The first violin never keeps the initiative for long: viola, cello and second violin take up motifs, shift accents and sustain counterpoint of remarkable continuity.
The Menuetto comes second and sets its regular stresses against the more independent lines of the trio. The Andante transforms a theme through variations that redistribute roles and alter rhythmic density. The final Allegro non troppo layers subjects, answers and accompaniments without sacrificing the clarity of the four parts.
First locate every entry of the same motif in the opening movement. In the variations, keep the theme in mind even when it changes register or rhythm. For the finale, practise the inner parts alone at a slow tempo: their articulation and tuning then allow the outer lines to remain free.
