About this work
The Allegretto of Quartet K. 499 moves with a suppleness that conceals the density of its motivic work. All four parts take up, extend or accompany the same cells, and transitions often grow from viola or cello rather than from the first violin alone.
The Menuetto Allegretto concentrates contrasts within short phrases and a more connected trio. The Adagio lengthens the lines and exposes suspensions. The final Molto Allegro tightens the counterpoint, circulates entries and sets imitative passages against broad chords.
In the first movement, coordinate shared articulations without making the timbres uniform. The slow movement needs continuous attention to the inner parts. For the finale, rehearse every entry with its counter-line and reserve collective chords so that they genuinely shape the journey.
