About this work
Quartet K. 575 begins with an Allegretto whose clarity depends on a highly mobile distribution of roles. The cello often leaves the simple bass function to answer the violins, extend a phrase or carry a motif in its upper register.
The Andante retains this conversation within more restrained motion. The Menuetto Allegretto and trio play with distances between registers, after which the final Allegretto develops rapid exchanges in which lower and inner parts become as decisive as the first violin.
Balance the ensemble from the cello rather than adding it afterwards. In the Andante, let each transfer alter the colour slightly without breaking the phrase. For the fast movements, agree on a shared articulation and lighten any part immediately when it returns to accompaniment.
