About this work
The Allegro moderato of Quartet K. 590 combines calm motion with highly active writing. Motifs move rapidly among the instruments, and the cello often rises above its bass function, requiring the ensemble to rebalance the tonal layers continually.
The Andante alternates connected lines, more mobile figures and structural silences. The Menuetto Allegretto with trio tightens the dance stresses. In the finale, all four strings exchange passagework, answers and accompaniments up to cadences where the energy becomes fully collective.
In the first movement, follow the motif rather than its register and adapt dynamics at every transfer. The Andante requires shared breathing even through silences. For the finale, rehearse changes of role slowly so that each new foreground appears without an added accent.
