About this work
Quintet K.174 adds a second viola to the string quartet. This fifth part enriches the middle register without merely doubling the harmony: in the Allegro moderato, motifs circulate among two violins, two violas and cello, each of which may lead or support the phrase.
The Adagio favours sustained sonorities and singing answers. The Menuetto ma allegro and its trio reorganise smaller groups within the ensemble before a more extended final Allegro combines rapid passagework, shared chords and exchanges between registers.
Begin by rehearsing the two viola parts together so that they remain distinct while forming one tonal centre. In the Adagio, tune intervals from the cello upwards. The finale needs shared upbeats and a mobile hierarchy: reduce the accompaniment at once whenever the motif passes to an inner part.
