About this work
Quintet K.406 is Mozart’s own arrangement of his Serenade for winds K.388. The move to strings changes the breathing of the lines without erasing the contrapuntal writing: in the Allegro, five instruments answer one another in shifting groups while C minor sustains constant tension.
The Andante opens more space between the parts. The Menuetto in canone introduces the voices imitatively, while the trio continues the process in inverted canon. The final Allegro restores more direct activity, yet the exchanges remain distributed among two violins, two violas and cello.
In the first movement, identify phrases that should retain the articulation of a wind instrument, then adapt them to the bow without adding weight. For the Menuetto, rehearse every canonic entry separately. In the finale, listen closely to the two violas: they often provide continuity between the upper lines and the bass.
