Quintet K.515 unfolds its Allegro on an unusually broad scale. From the opening, the outer registers answer one another, while two violas allow Mozart to extend lines through the centre of the texture. Motifs pass between instruments instead of remaining attached to the first violin.
The Andante brings the parts closer in a more intimate dialogue, particularly between first violin and first viola. The Menuetto Allegretto and trio shift the stresses, after which the final Allegro builds long continuity from light figures, returns and changing instrumental groups.
In the first movement, give long sequences a direction without hurrying their arrival. The Andante requires an equality of tone between violin and viola, with the accompaniment genuinely withdrawn. For the finale, settle articulation by families of motifs and retain dynamic reserve for returns and cadences.
