About this work
Quintet K.516 establishes the tension of G minor from the opening Allegro. Syncopated figures, silences and dynamic changes pass through all five parts; the two violas deepen the middle register and make contrasts between instrumental groups especially vivid.
The Menuetto Allegretto retains restrained stresses, with a more open trio. The Adagio ma non troppo unfolds long lines above a discreet accompaniment. The final movement begins with a dark Adagio before the Allegro gradually changes the atmosphere and renews the circulation of motifs.
Keep a steady pulse beneath the syncopations of the first movement and place silences together. In the Adagio, accompanying parts must support without thickening the texture. For the finale, prepare the relationship between slow introduction and Allegro: the contrast will be stronger if the fast tempo grows from the same collective listening.
