Sérénade Cor de postillon en Ré K 320 n°2

About this work

This second part of the Serenade K. 320 continues its festive journey by giving particular prominence to instrumental calls. The posthorn signal should emerge from the orchestra without sounding added: Mozart prepares it through rhythm, wind colour and the circulation of motifs.

The strings maintain the pulse while oboes, horns and bassoons shift attention from one section to another. Every cadence redistributes that balance; returns therefore benefit from changes of dynamics and articulation rather than a mechanical copy of the first presentation.

In rehearsal, isolate exchanges of motifs, then restore their shared bass and metre. Agree on note lengths, precise upbeats and breathing before the tuttis. The contrast will remain lively if the tempo moves forward without covering the posthorn’s characteristic timbre.
