Sonate n°18 en Do mineur KV457 - 1er mouvement

About this work

The first movement of the Piano Sonata in C minor K. 457 dates from 1784. Its Molto allegro begins with a unison gesture immediately interrupted by a more restrained answer. This opposition between assertion, silence and return runs through the exposition and gives the movement its dramatic character without requiring constantly massive sound.

The second theme does not erase the tension: it shifts it towards more singing lines, arpeggiated basses and rapid changes of register. The development fragments the opening motifs before a recapitulation that preserves their contrasts. The coda tightens the argument further instead of adding a merely brilliant conclusion.

Practise the opening attacks and their silences first, keeping a stable pulse behind every interruption. In passagework, retain a light articulation so that inner voices remain audible. Dynamic changes should grow from phrase and harmony; reserve tonal weight for structural points rather than every accent.
