Sonate n°18 en Do mineur KV457 - 2e mouvement

About this work

The central Adagio of the Sonata K. 457 suspends the first movement’s conflict without abandoning its shadows. A highly ornamented melody unfolds above a regular accompaniment and returns in increasingly elaborate forms. The movement therefore needs freedom of song held within a steady metre.

The middle episodes move the line through registers and keys, with rapid passages that connect rather than decorate. Returns of the theme are never identical: appoggiaturas, turns and changes of accompaniment alter the breathing. The closing bars gradually reduce the space before a restrained conclusion.

Establish the bass and the accompaniment’s regular values first, then sing the upper line without rushing its ornaments. Every flourish should lead towards an important note. Practise changes of register without a break in tone, and distinguish each return of the theme through dynamics rather than systematic slowing.
