Symphonie n°01 en Mi b majeur K 16

About this work

Mozart composed Symphony K.16 in London when he was only eight. The Molto allegro establishes E-flat major through broad chords, then answers them with lighter figures. Strings carry the momentum, while oboes and horns add depth to responses and cadences.

The Andante in C minor narrows the colour and moves over a regular accompaniment, with lines passed between sections. The final Presto returns to direct energy: brief motifs, dynamic contrasts and clearly articulated returns form a compact conclusion.

To rehearse the score, first settle the strings’ entries and phrase endings, then add the winds without covering the inner lines. Keep the accompaniment supple and even in the Andante. The Presto benefits from lightness: precise upbeats and silences matter more than an excessive tempo.
