About this work
Long published as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No.2, K.17, this work is no longer accepted in his authentic catalogue and is now associated with Leopold Mozart. The B-flat major Allegro alternates orchestral calls, string answers and firm cadences within a four-movement design.
The Andante relaxes the pulse before two successive dances, Minuetto I and II, which replace the usual minuet-and-trio pairing. The final Presto relies on rapid figures and brief exchanges. This design is broader than that of the early three-movement London symphonies.
Treat the piece as a distinct historical source rather than a secure work by the young Wolfgang. In rehearsal, clarify the Allegro repeats, distinguish the two minuets through articulation and keep the Presto mobile without suppressing wind responses. The banner added to the PDF wrongly says E-flat major; the music is in B-flat major.
