About this work
The score formerly catalogued as Symphony No.3, K.18 is not a Mozart composition: it is Carl Friedrich Abel’s Symphony in E-flat major, WK 18. Mozart copied the music and replaced the oboes with clarinets, which explains its long-lasting place in the old catalogue.
The Allegro combines full chords with more supple answers and sets the darker clarinet colour against the strings. The Andante slows the motion without losing continuity in the bass. A brief Presto closes the symphony with repeated figures and more theatrical energy.
The first task is to make the clarinets present without weighing down the chords. Let phrase endings breathe in the Andante and maintain an even bass. For the Presto, rehearse articulation in groups of bars, then combine the orchestra at a tempo where answers and dynamic changes remain clear.
