Symphonie n°04 en Ré majeur K 19

About this work

Symphony K.19 belongs to the works Mozart wrote during his family’s stay in London. Its D-major Allegro advances through short phrases: orchestral chords frame string passagework, while the winds extend or punctuate cadences.

The highly concentrated Andante replaces the opening brilliance with a more connected line and regular accompaniment. The final Presto restores D major through rapid motifs, repetitions and answers, giving this brief symphony a lively close without unnecessarily expanding its proportions.

In rehearsal, make the opening chords share one length and leave space immediately for the passagework. Build the Andante’s balance from the bass and inner parts. The Presto needs precise attacks but a light sonority at returns and cadences.
