Symphonie n°16 en Do majeur K 128

About this work

Symphony K.128 returns to a three-movement plan. The Allegro maestoso in C major combines broad chords with continuous string activity. Winds reinforce harmonic outlines and answers, giving the movement a stately bearing without immobilising the phrase.

The Andante grazioso lightens the orchestra and allows lines to unfold more flexibly. The final Allegro restores lively writing built from short motifs, returns and changes of register that sustain attention until the closing cadence.

In the first movement, distinguish majesty from mere volume: chords need weight, but passagework must remain mobile. The Andante requires a gentle attack and present bass. For the finale, coordinate upbeats and the ends of sequences so that returns sound necessary rather than mechanical.
