About this work
Symphony K.181 in D major uses three closely connected movements that recall a theatrical overture. The Allegro spiritoso establishes a brilliant orchestra through clearly punctuated chords and string passagework that continually renews the phrase.
The Andantino grazioso changes the light without immobilising the motion. The Presto assai almost immediately drives towards a lively conclusion: repeated figures, wind answers and tight cadences create the impression of one path rather than three isolated panels.
Prepare transitions between movements as carefully as their individual content. In the Allegro, brass should punctuate without covering strings. The Andantino needs coordinated releases. The Presto will gain energy if the pulse remains steady and rapid passagework retains light articulation.
