Symphony K.183, sometimes called the ‘Little’ G-minor Symphony, opens with a tense Allegro con brio. Syncopated strings, silences and interventions from four horns give the first phrase immediate dramatic relief.
The Andante calms the surface without erasing contrasts of register. The Menuetto retains severe stresses, to which the Trio answers with a more open colour. The final Allegro restores the urgency of the opening through short motifs, repetitions and sudden dynamic changes.
Keep a very steady pulse beneath the first movement’s syncopations and place silences as precisely as attacks. Balance the inner parts in the Andante. The finale needs rapid but unhurried bows, with horns reinforcing cadences without saturating the texture.
