Symphonie n°31 « Paris » en Ré majeur K 297

About this work

The ‘Paris’ Symphony K.297 uses a larger orchestra than Mozart’s preceding Salzburg scores, notably including clarinets, trumpets and timpani. The Allegro assai exploits contrasts between brilliant tuttis, rapid passagework and lighter episodes in writing designed to carry through a large hall.

The Andante restores more contained breathing without losing richness of timbre. The final Allegro resumes through clear gestures, dynamic changes and answers between groups. The absence of a minuet concentrates the symphony into three substantial movements.

Build the tuttis from strings and woodwinds before adding brass and timpani. In the Andante, preserve inner lines despite the large forces. The finale requires immediate contrasts but also a steady pulse: the brilliance will be more convincing if every return retains details of articulation.
