About this work
Symphony K.338 in C major opens with a ceremonial Allegro vivace supported by trumpets and timpani. Between the massive chords, strings and woodwinds sustain more mobile figures that prevent the music from becoming mere display.
The slow movement, Andante di molto più tosto Allegretto, lightens the forces and develops more supple lines. A second Allegro vivace closes the symphony without a minuet. Mozart began one, but the deleted fragment does not belong to the main score preserved here.
In the fast movements, build tuttis from the details of strings and woodwinds before adding brass and timpani. The slow movement requires a flowing bass and shared breathing. Retain tonal reserve for the finale: its brilliance depends on the hierarchy of returns, not on a permanent forte.
