About this work
The ‘Haffner’ Symphony K.385 opens with an Allegro con spirito in D major whose wide-leaping theme runs through the entire movement. Brilliant tuttis alternate with more mobile passages; trumpets and timpani broaden the cadences without carrying the energy alone.
The Andante relaxes the pulse and reveals finer articulations. The Menuetto with Trio restores ceremonial stresses, after which the final Presto launches into very rapid motion fed by returns, answers and sudden dynamic changes.
In the first movement, retain the character of the theme when it changes register or dynamic. The Andante needs closely coordinated releases. For the Presto, first rehearse at a tempo where answers remain audible; the final brilliance will come from collective precision, not uncontrolled racing.
