Symphonie n°37 en Sol majeur K 444

About this work

The former Symphony No.37, K.444 is not a Mozart symphony. Its three movements belong to Michael Haydn’s Symphony No.25 in G major, MH 334; Mozart added the introductory Adagio maestoso and adapted the work for a performance in his time.

The slow introduction establishes broad chords and harmonic tension before Haydn’s Allegro con spirito. The Andante sostenuto favours regular lines and a clear texture. The final Allegro molto advances through direct motifs, returns and strongly articulated cadences.

Reveal the difference between Mozart’s threshold and the body of the symphony without separating them. The Adagio should prepare the Allegro tempo. Keep accompaniments simple and alive in the Andante. The finale needs shared attacks and direct energy, but not a constantly heavy sonority.
