About this work
The ‘Prague’ Symphony K.504 begins with a broad Adagio built from chords, silences and tensions that open the space before the Allegro. This first fast movement develops several ideas imitatively and circulates material among the sections with unusual contrapuntal density.
The Andante maintains a supple pulse beneath highly worked lines. The final Presto restores theatrical energy, multiplies entries and drives motifs towards broad cadences. The symphony has no minuet.
In the introduction, give direction to silences and resolutions. For the Allegro, identify entries before adjusting volume: inner parts must remain audible. The Andante requires horizontal listening, while the Presto benefits from rehearsal in sectional groups before the tutti.
